The bladder; a hollow muscular bag that lies in the pelvic cavity storing urine produced in the kidneys. An average bladder can hold 2.5 cups, or 600 millilitres, of urine. Its lining secretes mucous to isolate the body tissue from urine, and with many folds (rugae), which flatten out so the bladder can expand and fill up. When empty, the bladder resembles a deflated balloon and becomes spherical when it fills up, then upon urinating the bladder shrinks in size.
